SUNLIT TREES

This is a painting of complementary contrasts. A classical subject given a modern energy and treatment.

It captures the beautiful extremes of light and dark when the evening sun touches the trees. It was painted en plain air in a Dorset woodland.

I applied special techniques to give the effect of the sun’s rays filtering through the foliage and creating textured highlights where it hits the trunks. I used a comb and palette knife to create these sharper lines and then I used my brushes to dab the more delicate and wispy leaves.

This painting excites me because it combines a sense of animation within the stillness of a September evening. The sky has a calm tranquility and truly allows the trees and forest floor to take centre stage.
